Greater Manchester pharmacies to become dementia-friendly

The Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership has launched a new scheme today (27 July 2016) to enable community pharmacies across Greater Manchester to become more dementia-friendly.

Developed by Greater Manchester Pharmacy Local Professional Network (LPN), the scheme provides a framework for how local pharmacy teams can support people with dementia and their families in various ways.

These include: ensuring pharmacy staff have undertaken dementia awareness training and signed up to become Dementia Friends; supporting people with dementia to make decisions about their medicines; putting measures in place to help patients take their medication at the correct time and remember to order their prescriptions; and thinking about how to speak with patients who make repeated requests for items already purchased.

In addition, pharmacies are being encouraged to make sure that leaflets and information about dementia and local support are readily available
.

Dr Jane Brown, chair of Greater Manchester LPN, said:

"We are delighted to be launching this framework today. Pharmacy teams are ideally positioned to help people with dementia and their carers to make positive choices about their health, ensure they are taking their medicines correctly and therefore getting the most out of them and guide them to any other forms of support they may need.

"

The initiative is launching in Bolton this week, with the aim of signing up at least 40 per cent of the 700 pharmacies in Greater Manchester during 2016/2017.
