HealthWatch: death toll highest in 10 years

Over 30,000 more people have died in the UK so far this year than in the same period in 2014, figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed. The death toll was the highest for a decade, according to a report in the Evening Standard (August 3).

Flu combined with cold weather at the start of the year saw the death rate peaking
in January at more than 30 per cent above the average for 2005-2014. Public Health England said there had been a "statistically significant excess" in deaths that coincided with flu and cold snaps.
