Anna Pearce

Anna Pearce, pharmacy technician and manager of Avicenna Pharmacy in Bournemouth, developed a system and a multi- skilled team to ensure the pharmacy always runs smoothly.

Anna has put a system and a multi-skilled team in place to help the pharmacy run smoothly, even if one person is off work. This is just one of the strengths that led to her being Highly Commended in the Team Leader Award, following a nomination by Avicenna’s head of retail Naz Meghji.

An example of the outstanding support that Anna provides to her colleagues is when a delivery driver had an accident while on her rounds. She was uninjured but very shaken, and said she was going to resign.

Anna underlined her great customer service skills, and trained her up as a counter assistant, a job she now loves, while recruiting a replacement driver. Anna says: “I think it is important to work with the talent you have and bring out the best in people.”

Another case in point is a staff member she encouraged to become a dispensing assistant. Being in his 40s and having not studied since school, he was initially reluctant, but Anna tutored him through the course, which he finished this summer. She comments: “It is incredible to see how his confidence has grown and he is so capable and proud of himself for taking it on and doing well. He is already talking about doing his Level 3!”

Her methods work: the business side of the pharmacy is growing by 10 per cent, services are up by seven per cent, and the staff have already achieved all of the quality points needed to be a healthy living pharmacy. Ali Stunt, chief executive of Pancreatic Cancer Action – charity partner of this year’s Recognition of Excellence event – and Awards judge said: “Great mentoring and motivational skills – Anna shows an organised approach with a focus on training.”
