Back in A&E

Some patients are visiting A&E more than 50 times a year, according to a BBC investigation. Data disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act from 183 A&E units revealed that nearly 12,000 people made more than 10 visits to the same A&E unit in 2012-13. One patient attended Luton and Dunstable Hospital a total of 234 times during the year, while another individual notched up 223 trips to Sheffield's Northern General.

Patients Association chief executive Katherine Murphy told the BBC: “These figures are of great concern and provide yet more proof that our already overstretched A&E services are being put under increasingly severe strain. “It needs to be recognised that every inappropriate attendance at the A&E would detract health professionals from attending to the genuine and often life-threatening emergencies.”
