Cheers to pub health checks

Nearly a third of men in South East Wales have signs of high blood pressure, according to a pub health check campaign. The campaign, which was organised by Mayberry Pharmacy in partnership with Wetherspoon, took place at 10 pubs between October and November 2013, involving more that 800 men and women.

Twenty-nine per cent of males showed signs of high blood pressure, including 12 per cent with severely high readings, while 15 per cent of women had high readings. Participants also received healthy living advice and a GP referral where necessary.

Paul Mayberry, managing director of Mayberry Pharmacy, said: “We know that conditions such as high blood pressure affect thousands of people in Wales, yet very few are aware of the problem or will visit their local pharmacy or GP. By offering these health services in places where people do find it comfortable to be, we are helping save more lives.”
