Cystitis is a common condition that mainly affects women. It is estimated that around 40 per cent of women will suffer from it at some point in their lives. Fortunately, it can be treated and – in many cases – successfully prevented with the correct advice and product recommendations.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise the causes and symptoms of cystitis
  • Understand the actions and uses of different types of treatments available
  • Offer additional advice to the customer to manage the condition
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.

Cystitis is an infection and/or inflammation of the bladder that can occur in any age group and in both sexes. However, it is more common among women.

It is usually an acute condition that can be relieved with OTC medication. However, around one in five women who experience cystitis will get it again. Anyone who suffers from repeated bouts of cystitis should be referred to the pharmacist, as they may need to see a doctor.
