Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is an unpleasant but short-lived condition that resolves on its own but it can cause dehydration.

Diarrhoea is an increase in bowel movement that results in loose or watery stools. It is often accompanied by abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. People of all ages can get diarrhoea, and for most sufferers, it is an unpleasant but short-lived condition that resolves on its own.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise the causes and different symptoms of diarrhoea
  • Understand the actions and uses of different types of treatments available
  • Offer additional advice to the customer to manage the condition
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.

Diarrhoea occurs when the lining of the large intestine becomes inflamed, preventing sufficient fluid from being removed from the food in the intestine. This makes the stools much looser or liquid-like when they are excreted from the body. If it continues for lengthy periods, diarrhoea can cause dehydration – young children and the elderly are most at risk of this.
