Great service on repeat

Community pharmacy’s essential contribution to the optimisation and safety of repeat medications has been highlighted by new statistics from Pharmacy Voice. The figures, taken from an audit of over 3,000 community pharmacies and more than 150,000 patients, found that one in every five patients had some sort of query with their repeat prescription that required resolution. Four out of five queries were addressed by the pharmacist discussing the medication with the patient or checking the patient’s medication record.

In addition, the audit discovered that pharmacy teams had prevented the inappropriate supply of over 15,000 prescription items because they were not needed, resulting in an estimated NHS saving of around £300,000 per week. Over 250 prescription items were not supplied because patients could not afford them and one in 10 repeat prescriptions were delivered directly to patients’ homes. Rob Darracott, Pharmacy Voice chief executive, said that the audit “provides pharmacy teams with real evidence to demonstrate the value that these services provide to the community.”
