The Welsh Government has announced that the community pharmacy discharge medicine review service (DMS) will continue after June, following an independent review. The DMS supports patients as they return from hospital by ensuring that they are prescribed the right medicines and also gives patients the opportunity to discuss their medicines with their pharmacist.

An independent evaluation concluded that the service is costeffective and also found that 39 per cent of DMS interventions could have helped prevent hospital readmissions. The DMS will now be written into the contractual framework for community pharmacies in Wales. Welsh Government health minister Mark Drakeford welcomed the news and added that “we will look to build on this success and the findings of the evaluation report will help us to do that."
