Headache and migraine

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints but most aren't serious and are easily treated with OTC medication.

More than 10 million people in the UK get headaches, making them one of the most common health complaints. Luckily, most headaches are not serious and can be easily treated with OTC medication.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise different types of headaches
  • Differentiate a headache from a migraine
  • Understand the different treatment options
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.

There are different types of headaches, triggered by a variety of factors. It’s important to identify which type a customer is suffering from in order to recommend the right treatment.

Why do we get headaches?

Just as there are lots of different types of headache, there is no one single cause. However, the most common types generally occur when the head and/or neck muscles contract or the blood vessels in the head and neck constrict, resulting in a decrease in blood flow.
