Heartburn & indigestion

Understanding the difference between heartburn and indigestion is important as customers may use the terms interchangeably.

Heartburn and indigestion are two terms used to describe discomfort and pain in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Although they are different conditions, customers may use one term when they mean the other. Using the WWHAM questions will help you get a clearer idea of what their symptoms are and the best advice to give them.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise the different symptoms of heartburn and of indigestion
  • Understand the actions and uses of different types of treatments available
  • Offer additional advice to the customer to manage the condition
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.
