Inactivity pandemic

England is in the grips of an ‘inactivity pandemic’, politicians have warned.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Primary Care and Public Health stated that the impact of inactivity on individuals, society and the NHS was no longer sustainable and called for urgent action to address the problem. In particular, Sir Kevin Barron, APPG co-chair and MP for Rother Valley, urged local authorities to take the lead by creating “environments to support positive behavioural change”, while working in partnership with “local agencies, such as community pharmacies, schools, workplaces and recreational spaces”.

The APPG pointed to research published in the Lancet showing that sedentary lifestyles are responsible for 17 per cent of all premature deaths and cost the NHS in England almost £10 billion a year.
