Medicines account for 12 per cent of hospitalisations

Medicines-related problems account for one in eight hospital admissions, according to a study from the University of Hertfordshire School of Pharmacy.

Following a systematic review of 45 studies, the researchers found that medicines-related problems accounted for 12 per cent of hospitalisations on average. Adverse drug reactions and poor adherence to medicines were the main causes of drug-related problems, while old age, polypharmacy and co-morbidities were the strongest risk factors.

Cardiovascular medicines were most likely to result in an adverse drug reaction requiring admission to hospital, followed by anti-cancer drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs and diabetes medicines.
