Mixed progress for local pharmacy services

Over a third of local pharmaceutical committees (LPCs) have seen a drop in locally commissioned pharmacy services since the NHS reforms were introduced, a new survey has revealed.

Furthermore, two-thirds of LPCs polled by Pharmacy Voice and PSNC did not think that clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were maximising pharmacy’s potential.

On the plus side, over half of LPCs were optimistic about the future, expecting to get more pharmacy services commissioned in time, while 44 per cent felt that local authorities were making the most out of pharmacy.

Alistair Buxton, PSNC head of NHS Services, remarked that there had been “great success stories, with new commissioners taking advantage of all that pharmacies have to offer”, but he regretted that “many LPCs are finding that local commissioners will not engage with them”.

He added that PSNC would continue to work to resolve barriers to pharmacy services commissioning
