Pharmacy helps drinkers cut down

Drinkers in Berkshire have cut down on alcohol with help from Drinkaware kits at their local community pharmacies, a new report has shown. Sixty-three per cent of pharmacy customers who used the ‘What’s in your glass?’ kits, which contain an alcohol unit measure cup, calorie and unit wheel and information booklet, reduced the number of units they consumed, while over half cut down on the number of days on which they drank alcohol. The kits were provided as part of a pilot scheme developed by Drinkaware in partnership with Berkshire Public Health and Berkshire Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) during last year’s Alcohol Awareness Week.

The vast majority (93 per cent) of participants said that the kits helped them to visualise the number of units in alcoholic drinks, while 83 per cent were better able to understand unit guidelines, and three-quarters became more aware of their drinking habits.
