Pharmacy is key to improving oral health

Community pharmacy can help to improve the oral health of the population, as part of the wider healthcare team, Pharmacy Voice (PV) has said in response to a Government consultation.

In its submission to the ‘Call to Action’ on ‘Improving dental care and oral health’, PV urged NHS England to ensure that dental care services were offered by the most appropriate providers and integrated with other primary care services. It also recommended that pharmacy be used as an access point for the management of common oral health conditions, provision of self-care advice and referral where necessary. In addition, PV argued that pharmacies needed more information about local dentists in order to signpost patients effectively. PV’s consultation response stated:

“Our routine contacts with the public are not only an excellent opportunity to provide preventative care; properly utilised, our workforce and locations hold the key to transforming public health outcomes across this country.”
