Pharmacy regulation under scrutiny

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has outlined plans for improving its model for pharmacy regulation, following feedback from pharmacy workers and patients.

In a new paper entitled Modernising Pharmacy Regulation: from prototype to implementation, the regulator highlights the progress that has been made to improve pharmacy regulation and discusses areas in which it still needs to adapt. For example, the ratings system for pharmacies is going to be reviewed in order to find an alternative to the “satisfactory” rating, which could be misleading to the public.

In response, Margaret MacRury, Pharmacy Voice board member, said: “It is encouraging that the GPhC is listening to feedback on inspections.” She added that Pharmacy Voice would continue to engage with the GPhC to ensure that outstanding concerns were addressed, including “the consistency of inspections, variance in time taken for inspection and ensuring that clear indications are given in terms of how to achieve an excellent grading”.
