Positive results for bladder cancer campaign

The Government is planning to re-run a national bladder cancer awareness campaign later this year, following successful results from a regional pilot.

The ‘Blood in Pee’ campaign, which is part of the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ programme, took place in October and November last year. Recently published results from the pilot study show that the campaign tripled GP visits about blood in urine and increased bladder cancer diagnoses by a fifth.

However, despite welcoming the increase in diagnoses, GP leaders have cautioned that a re-run of the national campaign, set for the autumn, would put GPs under too much pressure at a time when they are busy with winter ailments and flu vaccinations.
