RB promotes self-care

Ninety-eight per cent of pharmacy staff believe there is a need for improved awareness of unnecessary antibiotic use, reveals new research commissioned by Strefen. In addition, over half (59 per cent) believe alternative options for the symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) such as sore throats should be tried before antibiotics. But despite this, only a third (38 per cent) of those surveyed talk to their customers about symptomatic relief of URTIs, with many finding it difficult to convince patients that symptomatic relief is a credible and effective option.

Dr Martin Duerden, GP and member of the Global Respiratory Infection Partnership (GRIP), commented: “One thing pharmacy staff can do is to review the way they interact with patients over these infections. Pharmacists have a key role to play in helping patients not to see antibiotics as the solution.”

To help assist pharmacy teams in encouraging and supporting customers to self-care, RB is partnering with GRIP to provide new materials on engaging patients in the non-antibiotic management of URTIs. These include a display poster, patient leaflet tear-off pad, visual aid and summary booklet.
