Removing barriers to self care

Improved consumer health regulation combined with better access to OTC medicines are the keys to promoting self care and reducing costs to the NHS and society, claims a new white paper.

The report, by RB in association with PAGB, calls for a tailored system for regulating non-prescription medicines, arguing that the current framework is based on prescription medicines.

The authors propose various steps to help remove barriers to self care, including building self care into national health policy and designing the minimum necessary regulation to promote self care while protecting patient safety.

“In addition to the economic benefits, self care is what people want,” said John Smith, PAGB CEO. “With improved health literacy and support from pharmacists, self care can result in healthier populations, stronger workforces and more sustainable health systems. Governments need to do more to implement self care policy and promote positive behaviour change.”
