Sleep and insomnia

Everyone is different in terms of their sleep needs, but about a third of the population have sleep problems that affect their ability to function properly during the day. Here’s how you can help customers in the pharmacy to achieve a better night’s sleep.

Some people function perfectly well on three or four hours of sleep, while others need seven or eight hours a night. The amount of sleep required by each person depends on factors such as their age, lifestyle, diet and environment.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise what are the causes of insomnia
  • Understand the actions and uses of different types of treatments available
  • Offer additional advice to the customer to manage the condition
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.
