Time to Act: co-locate urgent care services

Patients are still attending A&E despite being aware of alternative options, according to a joint report from The Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the Patients Association entitled Time to Act – Urgent Care and A&E: the Patient Perspective. Being unable to access help elsewhere, as well as following the advice of other healthcare professionals were cited as the main reasons for patients still attending A&E.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine said that the findings demonstrate the need for patients to be fully informed of services such as out-of hours GPs, and that such services have sufficient capacity and are available when required. Both bodies also recommend co-locating other services with A&E departments to simplify patient decision making and streamline care.
