Too sweet on sugar

Consuming too much added sugar is associated with an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to new research. The American study used data from the US national health survey to compare CVD death rates with the amount of added sugar in people’s daily diets. It also found that people who drank seven or more sugar-sweetened drinks per week were more likely to die from CVD.

Commenting on the findings, Victoria Taylor, senior heart health dietitian for the British Heart Foundation, said: “Added sugar can mean extra calories, which can lead to weight gain, so try to keep sweet snacks and fizzy drinks as occasional treats rather than everyday staples.” Meanwhile, new data from Public Health England has revealed that two-thirds (64 per cent) of adults in England are overweight or obese.
