Welsh pharmacies take on skin cancer

Pharmacy teams in Wales are raising awareness of the risks and signs of skin cancer during a national public health campaign this month.

Throughout May, pharmacists and their staff will be on hand to advise customers on lowering their risk of skin cancer by, for example, seeking the shade in the middle of the day and keeping topped up with a high SPF sunscreen. During the campaign, which is being run by Public Health Wales and Community Pharmacy Wales and supported by cancer charity Tenovus, pharmacy customers will be invited to take a quiz to assess their knowledge of sun safety and skin cancer signs.

Andrew Evans, principal pharmacist for Public Health Wales, said: “There is so much that we can do to save lives by getting across the message that detecting cancer early has a huge impact on people’s chances of survival. Pharmacies are a great place to spread this message.”
