Adherence low for antihypertensives

One in four people with high blood pressure are not taking their medicines as intended, new research published in the journal Heart has found. After analysing urine samples from 208 patients attending specialist hypertension clinics, the researchers discovered that a quarter of patients were either not taking their medicines at all or were only taking them some of the time. Furthermore, 23 per cent of patients who had been diagnosed with renal denervation (a serious complication of hypertension) had no evidence of antihypertensives in their urine.

The findings suggest that many patients diagnosed with ‘resistant hypertension’ may in fact have difficulties taking their medicines correctly. The authors concluded that the study points to “alarmingly high levels of complete non-adherence to prescribed drugs”.
