Alcohol’s negative impact grows

There has been a sharp rise in alcohol-related hospital admissions and deaths, while prescriptions for alcohol dependence have also increased, according to new figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

There were an estimated 1.09 million hospital admissions for alcohol-related diseases, injuries or conditions in 2014-15, compared with 1.06 million in 2013-14, while prescription items dispensed to treat alcohol dependence nearly doubled from 109,000 in 2005 to 196,000 in 2015. Some 6,830 deaths were related to alcohol in 2014 – up four per cent from 2013 and 13 per cent from 2004.

Statistician Paul Niblett said: “These data provide an insight into the effect of alcohol on health services, and can offer a better understanding to the public, health professionals and policy makers of this ongoing public health issue.”
