New test empowers diabetes self care

The world’s first testing kit that allows people with diabetes to measure their HbA1c levels at home has launched in the UK.

Previously only available in a clinical setting, the HbA1c test is considered to provide the most accurate long-term reading of blood glucose control and is one of NICE’s nine recommended checks that people with diabetes should receive at least once a year.

The new A1CNow Self Check system is a disposable testing kit that allows people with diabetes to self-monitor their HbA1c levels every eight to 12 weeks.

Dr Ponnusamy Saravanan, associate clinical professor and honorary consultant physician in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Warwick and George Eliot Hospital, said: “This will empower the millions of people with diabetes to self-monitor their condition more closely and allow earlier intervention when needed.”
