Pharmacy teams surpass flu vaccination record

Pharmacy teams administered 221,000 more flu vaccinations under the national flu vaccination service in 2016/17 than in the previous year, according to initial data from PharmOutcomes and Sonar Informatics.

The Flu Vaccination Service 2016/17 finished on 31 March and initial data has confirmed that pharmacy teams have administered over 817,000 vaccinations, compared to the 595,467 vaccinations administered in 2015/16. The total number of vaccinations administered will be even higher as some pharmacy teams have not used the electronic systems to record administration of vaccines, and this figure is expected to be published later in the year by the NHS Business Services Authority.

Commenting on the data, PSNC director of NHS services Alastair Buxton said: “This is a fantastic result for community pharmacy teams and it shows how hard they have worked up and down the country to raise awareness of and provide the flu vaccination service. It also shows that more and more patients are valuing the convenience and accessibility of being able to have a flu vaccination administered in a community pharmacy.”
