Spotlight on the changing roles of pharmacy technicians

University of East Anglia (UEA) School of Pharmacy and the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) have launched a new research project into the roles of pharmacy technicians today.

The study will find out what post-qualification training pharmacy technicians currently receive to help them carry out their daily roles, as well as asking them what training and support they feel they need to be able to undertake these tasks safely and effectively. In addition, the research will seek to discover the potential roles pharmacy technicians could take on in the future, as the pharmacy profession continues to evolve.

APTUK will use the findings from this groundbreaking study to inform the professional support it provides to its members, as well as influencing how the future pharmacy technician strategy and workforce is developed.

UEA intends to present the work at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) conference (4-5 September), as well as submitting a report to the General Pharmaceutical Council to enhance its evidence base and inform its decision making.

APTUK stated: “Advances in pharmacy practice have resulted in pharmacists taking on more extended roles, but who will fill the gaps left by such innovation? Pharmacy technicians have the potential to be able to do this and, working together with pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, provide expert advice and care for patients. This additional expertise can only be of benefit to patients.”
