Minor burns and scalds can be very painful. Customers should be advised to minimise damage and reduce the risk of infection by following the advice listed below:
- Keep the burn under cold water (i.e. a running tap) for at least 10 minutes to cool the skin. Specialised burn sprays can also be used to reduce pain and cool the area. Example: Elastoplast SOS Burn Spray
- If possible, gently remove jewellery, watches or clothing from the affected area. However, it is important not to force the items if they are sticking to the skin or the area is swollen
- Cover and protect the burn with a suitable, non-adhesive, sterile dressing.
If you suspect that a burn is infected, or the affected area is larger than three to four inches across, advise your customer to cover the area with cling film and seek urgent medical advice. If you are unsure, refer your customer to the pharmacist.
Advise your customer NOT to:
- Use lotions, ointments or creams, as this can make symptoms worse
- Use adhesive dressings €“ unless they are specifically designed to treat burns
- Burst blisters.
