Pharmacists, know your cholesterol

More than a quarter of UK pharmacists do not know their cholesterol level, according to research from Flora pro.activ. The survey of 300 healthcare professionals (HCPs) found that while 63 per cent recognise the benefits of regular cholesterol testing, a third have only ever had their cholesterol checked once. Of those who know their level, over a third have a cholesterol reading of more than 5mmol/l.

The survey also highlighted that 60 per cent of HCPs understand the potential consequences of not changing dietary and lifestyle habits, if raised cholesterol is a concern. Being presented with the opportunity was the primary motivation for taking a cholesterol check among pharmacists, followed by a family history of cardiovascular illness and advice from their doctor. Advancing age, which is a major risk factor for raised cholesterol, was the fourth most common trigger.

“It’s worrying that so many healthcare professionals are unaware of their cholesterol level. Knowing your number is an important element to understanding your risk of coronary heart disease,” said Tanya Footman, senior nutrition and health manager, Flora pro.activ.
