Pharmacy overlooked for long-term conditions

People with long-term conditions are more likely to use an internet search engine than a community pharmacy to ask questions about their health, a new survey has revealed.

Nearly 60 per cent of patients polled by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) frequently used search engines, while less than 10 per cent regularly sought advice at a pharmacy. In addition, over three-quarters of people with chronic conditions wanted to take more control over their health needs but felt they lacked the necessary information and support.

In response, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) highlighted the work of community pharmacies in supporting independent living, including home delivery of medicines, support with re-ordering repeat medicines, compliance aids, falls assessments and signposting patients and carers to additional support.
