Smartphone eyesight warning

Spending all day glued to smartphone, TV and computer screens could have a damaging effect on eyesight, opticians have warned. A survey of 2,000 people, published by BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, found that on average, adults spend seven hours a day using mobile devices, PCs and TVs, with under-25s checking their phones 32 times a day.

Responding to the findings, opticians said that people who overuse electronic devices are at risk of a condition known as digital eye strain, which causes dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue and headaches. In addition, the blue violet light emitted from mobile phones could potentially damage the back of the eye, leading to macular degeneration, as well as disrupting hormone levels and provoking sleep and mood problems.

Optician Amanda Saint advised: “Get your eyes tested regularly and take regular breaks from your computer and handheld device.”
