Understanding service competency

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has developed a factsheet to help pharmacy professionals understand how the new ‘Declaration of competence’ (DoC) system can help them deliver services.

Endorsed by NHS England and Public Health England, the DoC system is a self-assessment framework designed to enable pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to assure themselves, employers and commissioners that they meet the requirements to deliver services. Mimi Lau, Numark’s director of services, described the DoC as “a great tool, universal to all pharmacists and technicians, which can be used to identify gaps in competency.

“As individuals undertake to only deliver a service once they have declared themselves competent, it empowers them to seek additional training specific to them when they have a need,” she added.
