Boots apologises over EHC price controversy

Boots has apologised over its comments about not wanting to lower the price of EHC available over the counter because it didn’t want to be accused of “incentivising inappropriate use”. The statement had led to a storm of angry criticism over the weekend led by female Labour MPs, including threats by women’s groups to boycott the country’s largest pharmacy chain.

Boots said it was “truly sorry” for causing “offence and misunderstanding” over remarks made to the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.

The retailer confirmed it will look for cheaper EHC alternatives after Tesco and Superdrug slashed the retail price of Levonelle and a generic equivalent. Boots had defended the price of EHC, saying it was based on the cost of the progestogen-based medicine and the consultation its pharmacists carry out with women.
