Kate Manning

Some people are simply born to work in pharmacy and this is certainly the case with Kate Manning from Day Lewis, Reading.

Kate’s first job, at a branch of Day Lewis, was the result of “a friend of a friend’s mum who worked there”, and although Kate knew nothing about the profession before she started, she declares: “I found it fascinating from day one.”

That enthralment translated into completion of an NVQ2 dispensing assistant course, quickly followed by qualifications as a health champion and stop smoking advisor, and she has now embarked on her pharmacy technician training. But perhaps more interesting is the fact that Kate has also trained as a phlebotomist, and has encouraged 10 others working for the company to do the same.

Kate also delivers outreach services and events in conjunction with the men’s health charity CHAPS at football and cricket venues, a link up that was organised by Day Lewis. She says: “We take healthcare to where people are. This is particularly useful for men as they are less likely to access services such as pharmacies or GP surgeries.”

Kate’s current role is regional support manager for branches in and around Reading. Regional manager Alan Greer says: “Kate is supportive of the pharmacies. However, when required, she knows how to be direct with them. This ensures she gets the job done in such a way that shows she is interested in the views of the teams. Definitely a sharp cookie!”

Awards judges and former winners Leanne Beverley and Myra Battle were particularly complimentary of Kate’s encouragement of others and didn’t hesitate in recommending her for a Highly Commended in the Rising Star category, sponsored by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. Fellow judge and Right Medicine Pharmacy head of group operations Richard Stephenson was in complete agreement, heralding Kate as "a true rising star".
