Taking responsibility

Kiran Bening’s proactive attitude and excellent leadership skills impressed our panel of judges

Kiran Bening, Highly Commended in the Team Leader category, went into pharmacy because of an interest in science and a desire to help people live better lives. The pharmacy technician has earned quite a reputation at the Market Way branch of Superdrug in Coventry where she works, with many patients seeking her out by name.

The reason for this is the high level of knowledge she has accrued over the years, which means she can deal with any query. She is keen to pass on her experience, training new staff and going to other branches to provide support, all the while pursuing her ambition of becoming an accuracy checking technician.

Recently, Kiran has taken on responsibility for several operational aspects, dealing with audits, service management and performance metrics. This also involved taking on a management role when the regular pharmacist had to take an unexpected six months off. This meant adding tasks such as generating staff rotas, collecting and submitting performance results, and processing and managing prescription deliveries to her usual duties – quite an achievement for someone who hasn’t been on any management training.

The proactive attitude and leadership that so impressed the judges has not escaped the attention of her employer, and Kiran has just been promoted to Superdrug’s Banbury branch. She is looking forward to a new challenge, saying: “I’m excited about being involved in the different services that are offered there. It’s a really good move for me.”
