Bronwyn Heatherwick

Bronwyn Heatherwick joined New Deer Pharmacy in Aberdeenshire after leaving school. So significant has Bronwyn’s contribution been that she was awarded a Highly Commended in the Glenmark Pharmaceuticals-sponsored Rising Star category.

An anaphylactic reaction sparked Bronwyn’s interest in medicine, a thirst for learning and passion for healthcare that New Deer’s pharmacist manager Patricia Middleton calls “incredble”.

Bronwyn is a hard-working medicines counter assistant and is looking to start her dispensary training as a way of furthering her dedication to her patients, which often translates into her making deliveries at lunchtimes and after work to ensure nobody goes without their medicines.

Bronwyn also looks outside the pharmacy to see what she can do on a wider scale. Having lost a friend to cancer while still at school, she has raised nearly £30,000 for Cancer Research UK by undertaking a whole range of events, from quiz nights and coffee mornings to family fun days, getting the pharmacy team involved along the way. The charity was bowled over by her efforts and named her its representative for its year-long ‘Relay for Life’ challenge in Scotland; an amazing achievement for anyone, but truly astonishing considering Bronwyn is only 19 years old.

The word "inspirational" was used by many of the judging panel after they had read Bronwyn’s entry, which was submitted by Patricia. Tess Fenn, president of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK and judge, commented: “The nomination from Bronwyn’s colleague truly supports her worthiness of this award through her achievements in a short space of time and her commitment to helping others.”

This is one young lady for whom the sky is the limit – quite literally, as the sky dive that she is undertaking for a multiple sclerosis charity is testament to.
