Myth 8: Coffee enemas detox the body and cure cancer
Coffee enemas are enjoying a revival on TikTok as a ‘detox’ and are promoted as part of Gerson therapy, a diet-based regimen that claims to treat cancer.
Cancer Research UK states that there is no scientific evidence that Gerson therapy works as a cancer treatment.
In fact, coffee enemas can remove large amounts of potassium from the body and have been linked to infections, dehydration, seizures, dangerous salt and mineral imbalances, heart and lung problems, and deaths.
The greatest danger is that people may delay or refuse effective cancer treatment.
The verdict: Dangerous and unproven. Any customer considering coffee enemas, especially for cancer, should be referred to the pharmacist.
