The type of alcohol IBA service pharmacies offer will depend on the extent of involvement of each member of the pharmacy team, the level of follow-up offered to patients and the funding model. However, each alcohol IBA service should operate within the same basic framework and include:
- An opportunistic, initial screening, using a short identification tool
- Appropriate information and encouragement to people drinking at lower risk levels
- Patients who fall into the increasing risk or higher risk categories to complete a full AUDIT screening and/or receive brief advice
- Referral of patients to the GP or specialist services, if appropriate
- The opportunity for follow-up with patients who wish to receive it.
