module menu icon Types of alcohol IBA service

The type of alcohol IBA service pharmacies offer will depend on the extent of involvement of each member of the pharmacy team, the level of follow-up offered to patients and the funding model. However, each alcohol IBA service should operate within the same basic framework and include:

  • An opportunistic, initial screening, using a short identification tool
  • Appropriate information and encouragement to people drinking at lower risk levels
  • Patients who fall into the increasing risk or higher risk categories to complete a full AUDIT screening and/or receive brief advice
  • Referral of patients to the GP or specialist services, if appropriate
  • The opportunity for follow-up with patients who wish to receive it.
