Understanding Incontinence

Between three and six million people in the UK have some degree of urinary incontinence, ranging from leaks of a few drops to voiding of the bladder. This module focuses on incontinence in women.

There are three main types of incontinence: stress, urge (including overactive bladder) and mixed. The word ‘incontinence’ is associated with stigma for many people and some patients feel the term does not apply to them and prefer phrases like “leakage of urine”.
