Conclusion

COPD is both preventable and treatable, yet it remains a major cause of illness and death. Community pharmacies are uniquely placed for preventive interventions using VBA and improving adherence to inhaler therapy through face-to-face and remote consultations. Pharmacies also contribute through their provision of key vaccinations.

GP practices are tasked with reducing COPD exacerbations and ensuring prescribing is based on current guidelines. The New Medicines Service (NMS) can help to ensure that newly diagnosed patients or those whose treatment has changed can be supported to get maximum benefit from their medicines.
