Community pharmacy teams have been advising on sore throats for many years. Now the NHS wants to see more episodes of care completed by community pharmacies as part of its strategy for managing demand in primary care.
Sore throats are one of the most common reasons why patients see GPs and one of the main reasons for prescribing antibiotics, but even where there is bacterial infection, antibiotics make little difference to outcome, and are unnecessary in most cases.
