Red flags

If a person with athlete’s foot presents with the following, advise them to see a GP:

  • The over-the-counter treatments aren’t working
  • They are experiencing a lot of discomfort
  • The foot or leg is hot, painful and red; this could be a more serious infection
  • The infection has spread to other parts of the body
  • They have diabetes
  • They have a weakened immune system6
  • They have a loss of sensation in the foot or pins and needles.7
