Signs and symptoms
The following are signs that a person could have a fungal nail infection:
- Toenails are affected more than fingernails
- Typically, the first, second and fifth toenails are most commonly affected
- In most cases, the nail thickens and turns yellow
- Very occasionally, a fungal nail infection can appear brown-black
- The nail surface can become white and powdery4
- The person may feel pain or discomfort, especially when pressure is applied
- The nails are brittle or crumbly.
