Signs and symptoms

The following are signs that a person could have a fungal nail infection:

  • Toenails are affected more than fingernails
  • Typically, the first, second and fifth toenails are most commonly affected
  • In most cases, the nail thickens and turns yellow
  • Very occasionally, a fungal nail infection can appear brown-black
  • The nail surface can become white and powdery4
  • The person may feel pain or discomfort, especially when pressure is applied
  • The nails are brittle or crumbly.
