Fortunately, we live in a time when most common ailments can be effectively treated with OTC remedies – paracetamol can relieve a headache, topical NSAIDs can ease muscle pain, and so on. Yet for the few common ailments without a quick fix cure, the aim of treatment is symptom management. One such condition is atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as ‘eczema’.

Eczema affects one in five children and one in 12 adults in the UK, according to the National Eczema Society (NES). Symptoms often come and go throughout an individual’s life and, while they may be uncomfortable, they are usually manageable with the right treatment. GPs and dermatologists may have extensive knowledge of dry skin conditions, but their time is often limited. The pharmacy, meanwhile, offers a convenient and friendly place where patients can seek help.
