EAAD: tackling antibiotic resistance

With antibiotic resistance fast becoming one of the biggest threats to health, awareness campaigns such as Antibiotic Guardian and European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) are now more important than ever.

This year's EAAD, taking place on 18 November, aims to raise awareness about the threat of antibiotic resistance, as well as the importance of prudent antibiotic use and appropriate prescribing. By educating the public about when antibiotics are suitable to take and increasing appropriate antibiotic use, it is hoped that antibiotics can remain effective for the use of future generations.

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has pledged it's support for EAAD and will be asking pharmacies across the UK to create a display in their practice showing their support for the event.

Paula Higginson, lead pharmacist, learning development, CPPE, says: €As pharmacy professionals, we have a responsibility to play a role in limiting the impact of the threat caused by antimicrobial resistance. We can do this by educating members of the public about the appropriate use of antimicrobials and by taking a proactive role in antimicrobial stewardship€¦ Join us and play your part in this year's EAAD with a window, store or practice display to raise awareness of this global threat to public health."

CPPE is also running a number of focal point workshops on Antibacterials in October and November, as well as e-workshops to coincide with EAAD activities. Find out more here.

EAAD will take place during the first ever World Antibiotic Awareness Week (16-22 November). Run by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the week's theme is Antibiotics: Handle with Care and aims to increase awareness of global antibiotic resistance and encourage best practice among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.
