Community pharmacy teams in Scotland are being asked to support Community Pharmacy Scotland’s Be the Early Bird campaign, which forms part of the Detect Cancer Earlier programme.
The campaign is encouraging patients with persistent, unusual symptoms to see their GP (or dentist for mouth-related symptoms), to ensure the best possible treatment options.
The earlier cancer is detected, the more options there are available. Red flags to look out for include unexplained bleeding, unusual lumps, unexplained weight loss or something that doesn’t feel normal.
The campaign is particularly aimed at people aged 40 and over as well as those living in deprived areas, where screening participation is lower and later stage disease is more common. It is running during November and again from February to March next year. Scottish pharmacy teams are being asked to help support the programme by helping patients access the campaign’s health information. They should also replace any Scottish Government campaign window posters with the new Be the Early Bird poster with immediate effect. Scan the QR code to access the assets, which are available in a range of languages.
