What are the OTC options?

There are two types of EHC available over the counter from pharmacies.

• Levonorgestrel is a synthetic version of the natural hormone progesterone produced by the ovaries. It is thought to stop or delay ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). Levonorgestrel must be taken within 72 hours (three days) of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. Example: Levonelle One Step
• Ulipristal acetate works on female hormone receptors in the body, stopping progesterone working normally. This also stops or delays ovulation. It must be taken within 120 hours (five days) of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. Example: ellaOne 30mg Film-coated Tablet.
