Sheila Gerrard

Mum of two and grandmother of five, Sheila has worked in pharmacy for 23 years, and this longstanding experience stands her in great stead when customers come into LloydsPharmacy in Weaverham, Cheshire, for infant care advice

The most common concerns she encounters are from mums who are worried about feeding problems, or whose babies have skin rashes. “It can be hard work looking after a baby and a new mum can be easily worried and emotional,” says dispensing assistant Sheila.

The pandemic has made working in the pharmacy “surreal”, she adds, saying: “Parents have been unable to have health visitor visits, so we have been here for them.” This means that customer care sometimes means just listening to parents. “We understand that they need reassurance and that is what we provide,” Sheila explains.

As well as signposting to the pharmacist, health visitors or GP, as appropriate, Sheila regularly signposts mums to online information sites, which she thinks are “especially useful at the moment when mums can’t be meeting up with other mums”.

The judges picked up on this signposting, with Rekha Shah, CEO of Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster LPC, saying: “Sheila provides fantastic infant and child care support, as well as for mums, with great signposting”. Sheila was awarded highly commended in the Infant Care Champion category.
